Are your stained teeth making you feel self-conscious when you smile? Are they stopping you from wanting to socialise or smile in public? Teeth can stain if we consume certain foods or drinks – coffee, tea, red wine, cola, berries, sweeties, sauces such as soy and ketchup – are the main culprits. They can also become stained if we smoke or take certain medications such as antibiotics, and might become naturally darker with age. Thankfully, these problems can easily be solved, from the comfort of your own home. Tooth whitening is a popular, effective and safe way to improve the colour of your teeth without removing any of the tooth's surface or damaging it in any way.
Here at 157 Dental Group, we offer patients the chance to try home whitening. It's a simple process that involves attending two appointments with your dentist. During the first appointment, your dentist will assess your teeth and take impressions of them in order to make custom plastic mouth trays that will fit snugly over your top and bottom sets of teeth. A week later at your second appointment, your dentist will give you your mouth trays, along with some whitening gel, and explain how you use it at home.
It's a simple process which involves filling the trays up with small blobs of whitening product and placing them over your teeth. You leave them on your teeth for up to two hours a day, and repeat each day for two to four weeks. It's important that you follow the instructions for the best results.
You can expect to start seeing your teeth becoming whiter after around two weeks, although individual results will vary and are based on your initial tooth colour and the nature of your tooth staining. Tooth whitening does not result in bright white Hollywood teeth; rather it lightens your existing tooth colour for a lasting natural effect, and only works on natural teeth.
